Always Remember CO is Extremely Dangerous!
With a frigid winter in the North, residents have had their heating systems on full blast . As a result, the frequency of Carbon Monoxide leaks has increased . CO is extremely dangerous as it is colorless and odorless . Luckily, many stores and home security companies sell CO detectors. Recently, our ATP Alarms Connecticut office was able to help a local resident and may have even saved the family’s life.
The companies that were merged together to form ATP Alarms have been around for over 20 years . With that said, there are tens of thousands of homes that have an ATP Alarm system in the house. However, not every homeowner has activated his or her alarm for one reason or another. Recently, we had a homeowner call in from an address that we used to monitor (they just moved in and had not activated the alarm yet). They called because of a beeping coming from somewhere in the house. The man on the phone thought that it was something to do with his ATP Alarms system. However, after speaking with Anna, one of our associates in customer service, the homeowner realized that it had nothing to do with our system. Anna, as a result of many years in the life safety business, began to ask the homeowner various questions in order to determine what this annoying beeping could be. Anna, by asking the homeowners if they had unmonitored CO detectors , discovered the issue at hand. Once we determined that it was in fact the CO detector making the noise, Anna instructed the homeowner to remain calm and move to fresh air immediately. She also instructed the homeowner to not open any windows, as it would prohibit the fire department from detecting an accurate CO reading.
After the fire department performed its analysis, there was in fact a CO leak . We are so proud of Anna and her quick thinking and instructions. She even went the extra mile and called the homeowners an hour later to see if everything was okay.
We recommend all homeowners have monitored CO detectors, as CO can disorient you to the point where you are unable to think or act rationally. By having a monitored CO detector, someone from our UL listed central station will reach out to you to determine if there is in fact a real emergency. Never assume that it is a faulty battery or dirty filter. CO is deadly and you must act accordingly.
