What Do I Really Need for Basic Security and Safety?
A plan for Security in your home or business should have a myriad of layers, done correctly. However something is better than nothing. Once you have a plan in place, you will find that that plan will evolve. When a security professional visits, they are likely to point out all of the vulnerabilities to your home or business. At the same time you will be thinking, do I need all those sensors, what do I need for basic security?
The answer is more complex than the question. Here are some facts as reported by Bureau of Justice Statistics; FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program;
Where a thief gains entry:
34% enter through the front door.
23% enter via a first floor window.
22% use the back door.
9% enter through the garage.
6% use unlocked entrances or storage areas.
4% use the basement to gain access to the home.
2% use the second floor.
65% of burglaries are residential.
-> Homes without security are 3x likely to be burglarized.
-> A favorite target of a thief is the master bedroom.
-> Favorite items include; cash, drugs, jewelry, electronics and your guns.
So which entrance should you protect? Let’s hold onto that question while I post some more statistics;

-> When Do Most Burglaries occur? Between 10:AM and 3:PM
-> How often do burglaries occur in the USA? Every 14.6 seconds a burglary takes place 24/7/365
-> How long does the average burglary take? An average of 8-12 minutes
-> Who is the typical burglar? A male teenager who typically lives within a couple miles of your home is. Yup, those darn kids. The chances of being hit by a pro are statistically low, still its best to plan for the best and prepare for the worst.
Full perimeter protection means having a contact on all of the entrances and windows, and that’s what I recommend for starters.
Motion detectors are great second layers of protection along with glass break detectors . A home armed with these layers and a monitored security system stand a fighting chance against thieves.
Security cameras are a very proactive way to protect who you love. Should your domicile be violated, you’ll be glad you have video of the culprits. Money well invested.
Other layers of security for your home or business include monitored CO and smoke detectors . Every year people die from exposure to CO, smoke and fires.
