A friend posed this question recently; Living primarily in Melbourne Florida , I know I need home security because of the energy features and monitored smoke detectors but I have a home in Hamden, CT which I visit a few times a year, does the second home in Hamden need home security too?

My initial thought was if the property had value, then yes but if it wasn’t worth much I wasn’t too sure. As I delved into the subject more I realized that my friend was taking advantage of the feature in the system he purchased last year. He at first wanted just security , which I was happy to accommodate. As he came to read about all of the features his Lynx 7000 had he decided to hook up a thermostat to the system. With the security system configured to be a certain temperatures when he was home and away he started to see how it would save him on his energy.

He added more z wave modules after, first it was lighting and later he had to have the z wave enabled garage door opener . My friend also liked the weather and traffic report he would see on his screen as he left the home after arming the system . He was one of the people who enjoyed technology.

Getting back to his question, does his second home in Hamden need security, I think yes and here’s why ;

Insurance discount ; because the home has a monitored security system with monitored smoke and CO detectors he will receive an insurance discount.
Energy savings ; Incorporating home automation into the heating and cooling will save even more money and add convenience.
Peace of Mind ; One of the rewards of a home security system is peace of mind.

Most people think about the investment when thinking about home security , but as you can see based on the above it’s pretty much a wash because when you add it all up home security pays for itself.
