How are Burglars using Social Media in 2015?

Recently, I started to question whether or not people go out to dinner for photo opportunities or to sit down and enjoy a nice plate of chicken parm with some loved ones. Last Friday, I was at an Italian restaurant and I swear I was almost blinded by all the flashes going off. Of course, I am being extremely dramatic, but at the same time it seemed as if there was a picture being taken every five minutes. I began to get irritated by the situation until my mother made a good point. “ I wonder if all these people are posting their pictures to Myspace ”? After I heard her say that I immediately had three separate thoughts:

1) Does Myspace still exist?
2) Does my mom use Myspace?
3) Who could possibly care what this twenty three year old is eating on a Friday night.

As the night moved along I started to think about social media even more. Like most ideas it somehow got intertwined with security systems and really got my mind racing with crazy thoughts:
Are your tweets protected?
Is your Instagram account private?
Is every single Facebook friend of yours someone that is trust worthy?

When you actually think about it is terrifying how open we are with our social media outlets. Burglars will oftentimes target residences with a lot of boxes or mail because they know that the occupants are away on vacation . Who’s to say someone wouldn’t come to your home because they saw a picture of you shark diving off the coast of Malaysia. Sounds far-fetched, but if you think about it, you really are just telling people to have free reigns on anything in your home. If you think they would not be able to track down where you live then you’re just being naïve. Little Johnny from freshman year of high school might not be so friendly anymore, and who knows how many random people have access to what you post.

The whole point of this blog is to let people know there are different ways to lower your chances of being targeted for a home invasion. Whether you have a security system or are looking for one there are always little pointers to keep you more safe than the next person. In this day and age you can never be too safe.
