Comcast outage throughout Connecticut

Widespread Comcast outage, were you affected?

This morning there was a widespread Comcast outage throughout Connecticut and other parts of the North East. Our society has become more and more reliable on the internet. When the internet and phones go down, several homes and businesses experience a great deal of inconvenience—cannot place calls, video streaming becomes more difficult or expensive, etc.

What happens to your alarm system when you do not have phone or internet capabilities? If your alarm relies on Comcast to communicate with the central station, what happens when Comcast no longer provides the service that it is supposed to? The answer is very simple— your alarm will not communicate with the central station in the event of an emergency if your alarm relies on Comcast internet or phone and there is a Comcast outage.

We suggest that our customers have multiple paths of communication for their alarm systems. Ideally, these multiple paths should rely on two different providers. This is based on the very basic concept that diversifying reduces risk . If your alarm system has two paths of communication that rely on the same provider, like Comcast phone and Comcast internet, your alarm will still fail to communicate during a Comcast outage. However, if you have an alarm that relies on CDMA cellular communication and Comcast internet for communication, your alarm will continue to operate during an internet/phone outage.
