Important Nor’easter Precautions and Tips

The benefit of living in New England is getting to experience all four seasons. The negative of living in New England is getting to experience all four seasons. With our first “ Nor’easter ” among us, please take the necessary safety precautions.

Preparing for a winter storm can help protect your valuables and more importantly, your family. Prior to the storm, be sure to:

  • Do your best to insulate your windows . The best approach is to install storm windows. However, covering your windows with plastic or even shutting your shades may help.
  • Maintain your heating equipment and chimneys throughout the year. During a storm, be sure to leave the heat on!
  • Make sure to fill up your car with gas when you first hear about a storm. In anticipation of a storm, some gas stations run out of GAS!

Also, it is not a bad idea to put together a supply kit . We are a life safety company and we always like being prepared, even if that means being over prepared. Here are some suggestions for your supply kit:

  • Water . We suggest have at least a 3 day supply.
  • Food . We gotta eat! Having a supply of non-perishable and easy to prepare food.
  • Flashlight with extra batters
  • First aid kit
  • A radio ! Yes, an old fashioned radio. If power goes out and you do not have a generated, it is possible your internet won’t work.
  • Medications . Very important!
  • Basic tool set
  • Shovel and salt
  • Warm Clothing!
  • Alternative heating methods!
  • Sufficient chargers

These are only some basic items that will make you and your family much more prepared for inclement weather. We encourage everyone to keep an eye on elderly friends and family —be sure to call and check in during the storm.

For future storms, you may consider purchasing a panic unit for elderly family members. If something happens during these cold months, it is important that emergency authorities are notified immediately. These panic/emergency pendants are very inexpensive and provide a great piece of mind during storms .

As always, if you have any questions about life safety , please give ATP a call today . Stay warm!
