Home Security, What Is The One Product You Need?

DO / ATP • February 5, 2016

During free home security consultations with perspective clients of ATP , I always get asked the simple question, “ what is the one product that you think I need to have? ” My response is always the same. This leads to every single customer giving me the same high pitched “ really?! ” after hearing my opinion. If you were brainstorming and did not come up with a yard sign from a local security company then you are wrong, but do not worry I do not think one customer has ever guessed correctly.

The reason why my clients are in shock that I say a yard sign is because they feel it does not protect their home in any way. Oftentimes I hear that people do not want a sign because they do not want anything taking away from their landscaping or that they do not want our marketing on their front lawn. To me, this is mind blowing because they are declining an additional piece of protection for their home. Let’s step into the mind of a burglar for a second. You are in a nice middle class neighborhood doing some scouting of the area to see who is home and who is not home. You start to walk up to the first home and just as you are about the reach the front door, you notice a yard sign sitting to the right of the steps. If you were a criminal with any common sense, you would think to yourself, this is not worth the risk, walk back down the driveway and walk to their neighbors house to see if they have the same protection. The reason I mention a local alarm company sign is that they are much harder to obtain. Meaning, people cannot go on eBay or Craigslist and buy an American Total Protection (search on eBay ADT Yard Sign). Burglars suspect that a home with a yard sign from a national company may in fact not be protected. Homes that have a local reputable alarm company sign may lead a potential theft to think that the house does in fact have a monitored home security system .

The reason why I bring this scenario up is not to scare people, but to let them know the importance of having a yard sign. Of course your alarm will sound if they attempt to come into your home while the alarm is set, but do you really want to deal with that terrifying moment where you realize someone tried to invade your home? We all like to think criminals are unintelligent and would do anything to make a quick buck. It would be idiotic of us as homeowners not to realize that burglars would target homes without security systems first rather than a home with one. So the next time someone offers you a yard sign, think to yourself, what is more important? Having the overgrown Japanese maple tree stand out or having the ATP shield in your front lawn deterring a possible home invasion. This is real life . You need a real security company . We are American Total Protection .

The first step to controlling access to your building is the door(s) employees or visitors may enter through. In the morning, do you unlock these doors for the day? Do you leave it locked throughout the day? Who is responsible for these tasks?
