Break In

“I don’t have to worry about a break in.”

One of the more common responses I get when I ask a person if they have a home security system is, “ I live in a safe neighborhood, I don’t have to worry about a break in ”. That’s almost as bad as the “ I have a dog ” comment and then I walk into the perspective clients home and I have a Chihuahua trying to bite my Achilles tendon off. All kidding aside, just because you live in a nice neighborhood does not somehow exclude you from the list of potential homes that could be broken into. Even though burglars have the reputation of not being the most intelligent people I assume that they probably don’t think to themselves “ I should really stay away from Greenwich, they have some really nice neighborhoods over there ”.

Now this blog is in no way shape or form meant to be a scare tactic so that you all go grab your phones and call us at ATP , but just to change your way of thinking that a break in could never happen to me. My parents have lived in the same quiet town in the middle of Connecticut for over 30 years. Not once was there reported theft in their neighborhood until about 10 years ago (before I started working for ATP). One afternoon, our neighbors were robbed of anything that was of great value to them: jewelry, electronics, etc. When I say anything, I mean the entire house was swept clean and there was basically only furniture and clothes left in there. When the police did a search of the house they found out that the robbers took a van backed it into their garage, shut the garage, and had their way with the home because it was a work day and no one was home. Guess what. Before that day not a single person had an alarm system , but by the next week the street was flooded with systems.

Just because you live in a nice area does not mean you’re safe from being a potential victim, if anything I personally think it puts you more at risk. Think about it, if you’re a thief would you rather risk getting caught going into a home without a security system and a few valuables or a home without a security system with a plethora of valuables? If a robber walks up to your home and sees a big black and red ATP yard sign they aren’t going to be targeting your home, but they will probably target your neighbor who is showing no signs of home security. Protect yourself, before you and your family are a victim not after the fact. Remember this is real life and you need a real security company . ATP Alarms is American Total Protection .

The first step to controlling access to your building is the door(s) employees or visitors may enter through. In the morning, do you unlock these doors for the day? Do you leave it locked throughout the day? Who is responsible for these tasks?
