Business Surveillance Systems: Protecting Your Property in 2020

You may be tempted to install your own  video surveillance cameras  in your business. After all, it’s just ‘plug and play’. Plus, there are so many camera options online for you to pick whichever you think works.

But, before you DIY your business surveillance system – no matter how small – here are a few tips to consider.

1. Identify your business vulnerabilities
You need to identify the potential security threats to your building. Conduct a security assessment to find the vulnerabilities that are unique to your business. This includes people and property. Look at how to protect both and reduce risks.

Here are some ideas to get you started on your security assessment.

  • Are your entry and exit ways properly secured?
  • What type of access controls have you implemented?
  • Do you have any security blind spots on the property?
  • Are all areas adequately lit? This includes corridors, stairways, parking areas.
  • Is there high visibility at your POS locations?

2. Identify Resources Needed
Now that you’ve conducted your business security assessment, it’s time to look at your options to address them.

This means looking at each vulnerability to determine which security feature would best address the risks based on your unique circumstances.

For example, what resources would you need to ensure you have proper lighting? Do you need a dusk-to-dawn type system, or just a regular switch system will do? What types of access control systems would best suit your business? If you’re managing a government building versus a private business, the access control restrictions may be different.

So, go through each area and look at the best option to keep your business and employees safe.

3. The Implementation Stage
Now that you’ve looked at the areas for improvement and found your resources, it’s time for set-up. That means identifying proper placement for lights and video surveillance systems for maximum impact. For example, if you install a security light that is blocked by an eave, you’ve just defeated the purpose of providing better lighting.
